AWARD-WINNING VERBATIM THEATRE THAT CONFRONTS THE GLOBAL ISSUE OF MODERN DAY SLAVERY

ABOUT | THE SHOW

SOLD is a politically urgent, dynamic piece of verbatim theatre that confronts the global issue of modern day slavery. Under the direction of Complicite Associate, Catherine Alexander, the ensemble has woven together this theatrical event from original interviews arranged by the Human Trafficking Foundation. The result is must-see theatre: innovative, engaging and immersive. SOLD exposes the hidden world of human trafficking looking at domestic slavery, forced labour, child trafficking and the undesirable world of the sex trade.

PRODUCTION HISTORY

SOLD was developed in October 2010 following a period of intense, detailed research. Links were formed with The Human Trafficking Foundation through Anthony Steen, who features in the show as a character played by Peter Randall. Other organizations became involved including Croydon Community Against Trafficking (CCAT) and the Poppy Project.

The company focused on human trafficking as a whole; exploring forced labour, internal trafficking, domestic slavery and the sex industry. The central characters were derived from live interviews, in addition to news articles, journals and videos on the internet. We rehearsed for a period of five weeks, developing the stories and threading them together. We showed a work in progress at the Central School of Speech & Drama in December 2010 and received an excellent response.

In 2011, we entered a re-write period. The show is constantly evolving in line with current affairs. We sourced brand new interviews, conducted fresh research, and created new scenes. In August, SOLD premiered at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. It ran for twenty-seven performances at the Pleasance Courtyard. It received five stars reviews and won the Amnesty International Freedom of Expression Award.
